ACIM students for Barack Obama

Every once in a while, after a long time, there appears a figure in our public world that has the ability to speak to our better nature . . . to uplift and inspire. These figures generally appear when the time is right, and the need is great.

Now is such a time, in my opinion. Barack Obama is the man of the hour, and the need for inspiration is surely great. There is no shortage of voices that speak to our fears and personal selfish interests. Any one of those voices for fear, for all practical purposes, is just the same as any other.

It is a rare thing to hear a different voice coming from a man as unlikely as Barack Obama . . . a lawyer, a politician, and an African-American. The voice that speaks through him is the voice of sweet reason, hope, and healing.

This is our great need.

The laws of perception

A Course in Miracles tells us, more or less, "Don't trust your lying eyes!" Here's proof that you CAN NOT see straight, even when you know it's a trick.

The following optical illusion is presented as an example. This graphic illustration consists of straight lines and square boxes. Every line in this illustration is either parallel with or at right angles to every other line. There are no curved lines here. None!

Stare at this image for 5 minutes, if you wish. At the end of that time you still will not be able to see straight lines. There is nothing you can do about it.

Optical illusion

spinning woman

It is possible to see the woman spinning either in a clockwise direction or in a counter-clockwise direction. Trust me, it's true.

If you have difficulty switching your perception from one direction to the other, from clockwise to counter-clockwise or the reverse, try bliking your eyes rapidly, or focusing your attention on her feet, or unfocus your gaze in general. The first time is the most difficult. After that it gets easy. Just trust that it is possible.

If you consider the shadow cast in the foreground, with rear lighting, you can see that the logical direction of rotation is counter-clockwise. When seen rotating counter-clockwise, it is her left leg that appears to be extended, and the shadow of that left foot passes from right to left as her extended left leg passes from right to left behind her. When the appearance of rotation is clockwise, it is her right leg that is extended and it passes from right to left in front of her, but logically it would not cast that same shadow.

This is a strange thing.
